August 2010 Part 3: At Canyonlands National Park!

These are the filling of our life. We were in a couple of different places for these different photos so check them out!

Lots of things happening!
Picture Explanation Options
This is on the way to the San Juan County Fair. We took the way through the Abajo Mountains (the back way in to Monticello.) Harts Draw Road! Sasha and I had taken that very road to go to Robertson's Pasture Trail.

Here we are with Smokey Bear from the US Forest Service. They get a bad rap from the locals who want to do more grazing for their cows on the Forest Service land. So they go to county fairs to beef up their image. National Park Service also has to make nice as well. Some folks here do not like us too. Seems they do not have enough places to ride their ATVs out here and want to Drive their jeeps to arches rather than walk and camp. But we had fun at the Fair.

Sasha went with Dana and Katy to training. And they were supposed to go on this great hike (Fiery Furnance) but they had torrential storms that happened right when they were going to go, so they went on Devil's Garden trail instead. But this is a picture of Sasha at Navajo Arch. Landscape Arch.

As Sasha says: These pics were taken no more than 1 hour after a violent rain storm with heavy lightning! 2-3 inches of water easy. The weather ruined our planned Fiery Furnace hike, but we made the best of it.

Dana and Katy two SCAs who went to training with Sasha. Both excellent hikers, I am sure Sasha was gasping for breath by the time they were done with their hike! Great women both!

FYI - SCA = Student Conservation Association. It is a way to get into the NPS, by volunteering your time for ~ 16 weeks. They each got about $75 a week for doing an awesome job. Hopefully they will get park ranger jobs. They have my vote!

Landscape Arch, you would never know that it was raining not more than an hour before this.

Salt Creek was flooding - and so we and Katy and Stephen were out checking out the flood. The flood did not last long, but had some major damages later on. Including Salt Creek trail, there were some areas that could not be traveled on for a LONG time.

Sasha's shirt looks to be the same color as the chocolate mud flowing behind us! Sasha: This was last week when we had some localized heavy rain. The pics were taken well AFTER the crest...

So August is now over, and September is coming upon us. It will be the last month at Canyonlands before we head back east. So please check out September's Pictures and September's Expenses.
