Laura and Sasha's Trip to Death Valley - February 2011

February 14th: Going to Death Valley National Park tomorrow! So lots of pictures to come! We are going with my Mom and Dad, my Mom got reservations at a lodge in Death Valley. As my parents rented a small SUV, we are going to check out a 4x4 road that should be fun. Dad will drive part of the way, and then Sasha will take over. It should be interesting!! But first picture is of the hotel in Las Vegas - the pool was quite beautiful, but water was not too warm.

At a casino hotel just outside of the strip. Nice looking pool, but a little cold.

Map The Bottle House, there is a fence all the way around it, and there is a RV host there just to protect the ghost town of Rhyolite. We thought it was great to go to this town, as we lived on a street called Rhyolite when we lived in Virginia. The link that I have about the Bottle House - just scroll down to see about the Ghost Town of Rhyolite.

Map Again, all behind a fence because so many people steal stuff.

Map Entrance to the Park, no fees because well, no hut and no one about. This is the start of Titus Canyon, right now not too bad!

Map Do you see the road? Click on Info to see it better!

Map A bit of the view out the window. Sasha was driving at this time and I was behind him. Why does he get close to the edge? Well, the other side was full of these rocks, see, so you kind of have to get close.

Map Cool colors in the rocks.
Map There is the road again! We are at the top of this canyon. Just click on the picture to get the larger size.

Narrow Road, no guard rails here!

Then going DOWN!

Map
Map But before we go down, we go for a picture, using the truck for support.

Map Here is the truck that we are using. I guess you could say this is not really a truck, and it is not yet too dusty. I do not know if Mom and Dad were supposed to take it off of a paved road, but we'll wash it up afterwards.
Map There is the road again. Just look at those colors of the rocks, so nice. And that blue, blue sky. I love the contrast between the rocks and the sky, just beautiful! Map

not really, we are in the national park now! :)
Map
Map I believe this was at the lunch spot on a slab that used to be for the post office.
Map More Petroglyphs, as you can see here. We can tell we are almost to the end, as there are people starting to show up. They are walking from the other end and coming into Titus Canyon. Map
Map You see, it is one way only, so we knew that no one would be coming from the other direction. Always good when the roads are so narrow! Map
Map We thought these were gila monsters but they are chuckawalla instead. Very large but not poisonous.
Map Who would have thought this would be such an interesting road? It was such a beautiful day!

So this trip through Titus was pretty cool as you can see from the pictures. Dad got back in as the driver and we headed over to the motel to check in. Mom had gotten two rooms very nice for a lodge in a national park. The distances are huge here, but we will be going to Scotty's castle tomorrow, February 16th.

..

..

Now, distances are huge here, and unfortunately, I do not remember where we were when this picture was taken, but it is an excellent one of my Mom, so here it is - And really Mom, you should have this as your profile picture on Facebook.

So Check out the February Pages: Death Valley, Scotty's Castle, and DEVA Geology. We also did a hike before we went out to Death Valley, again going to Liberty Bell Arch.
