June 2011: Grand Canyon National Parks

This is a new page. I have taken the information from Facebook to make the page. Ultimately I will have pictures in here, will have to resize some of them. Not only that, we moved to Grand Canyon and we are getting used to a new place, and I also had to work on more programs, so there was less time spent on the website. But that will be changing! I am getting close to getting these pages done, and WOW, as it is July, really close to having them done in more recent times! But no patting myself on the back yet.

So anyway, here is what was happening in June: But what you will not find is too many pictures. For some reason there are none. I think partly because we did not do as much hiking, Sasha was working more, and had gotten a flat in his motorcycle. So not too many rides for him. Plus we were dealing with a mouse problem and a bobcat (Sort of!)

June 2nd: Sasha: I'm at Flagstaff Hospital Emergency Room, suspect hantavirus....waiting to see the doctor

And the comments begin:

Sasha Jevtich Cleaned up some mouse droppings 5 days ago and did not wear face protection.....

Sasha Jevtich I'm OK now, but the RN at the GC clinic said get your butt to the ER, so that's what I did

Me: I am sure you will be fine, and that it is just a cold, but I am glad you are getting checked out and tested. I was working on my program and did not realize you were on facebook. I love you.

Sasha Jevtich yeah, ER is funny here, no cell phones allowed, but great WIFI. Glad I have a MacBook.

Sasha Jevtich Just read your book sorry I did not give you the power :(

Sasha Jevtich Oops posting as you but it is me

Sasha Jevtich Leaving ER now, with a sore thought, no hantavirus. Apparently more rare than the GC RN thought...

Sasha Jevtich back home, will be sleeping in.......not answering phone

Charlie Kolb Glad you don't have the Mouse Doom...

Julie Fakler Callahan Feel better Sash !! You'll be up and around soon

Yvonne Jevtich Batal Glad u r ok
What are symptoms?

Jody Epstein Lish hope you feel better soon-that sounds like a complete drag...

Brian Ruhlman Get some rest and recharge my friend!

Sam Lish Enough...get back out exploring quickly and feel better Sasha.

Me: Hi All, Sasha came in at ~ 4 am last night. While it was a scare, I am still glad that he went, just in case. @Yvonne - the symptoms are flu-like and had just cleaned up mouse droppings without a mask, nor sprayed down the poop with water before vacuuming it up.

Now of course, I am hearing sounds throughout the RV that sound like either mouse or squirrel...Oh so much fun living in the wilderness....

Carolyn Steele Segrist Wow, Sasha. That's kinda scarry. We had lots of mice in our rig at Hatteras, but now we have the new one - so far no mice. And we've been in the woods; still are. I'm glad you posted this. I'd never heard of this particular virus.

Sasha Jevtich The doc said it was pretty rare.....in theory you get hantavirus by inhaling the dust of rodent droppings. Doc said it would be unlikely in my case as I described it. Hantavirus is killed by UV rays (sunlight). It would be more likely present if you were working in a dark archeological site, like an old Indian Hogan.....

Me: So I hope you are feeling better, please drink lots of tea with lemon and honey. I will be home ~ 5:30 pm.

William James Holy Jesus when I saw the post i was concerned but skeptical. Glad it was just hype. You be back to yourself in no time. No Hanta in that virus..... feel better bro.

Sasha Jevtich thanks. big to-do over nothing. just a coincidence that I got a cold in the same time as the HV incubation period.

Michael Hansen Glad your Okay. Thanks for the health lesson, never heard of that before.

June 3rd: While this is everyone's Friday, it is my Monday, but at least I know my Darling Husband, Sasha, is OK and resting comfortably. A delicious breakfast awaits your hunger, it is very berrilious.

..

..

So after that fiasco, here are some shots of the ground. As you can see there are quite a few holes in the ground. These holes are where the mice live. But not for long. We are getting some bobcat urine to place around the rig. It is to "train" them not to come close. So far so good. And not only that, a bobcat came around (no we did not get a picture of it. We just saw the footprints.) So here are the pictures of the ground. See if you can see the holes.

I am not going to make the pictures big. Just thinking about those rodents makes my skin crawl! These pictures were taken on June 7th.

Map
Map You would almost think they would stick there head up. But We got them in the end. Or rather, a bobcat did. While we had to put the stuff down twice, they have not (ok, knock on wood now) come back.

June 10th: OK - we had mice in the lot next to us. So I bought Bobcat urine pellets to spread around the rig - therefore no mice. Today we saw a huge hole and Bobcat tracks - what was he digging for? Anyway, now we have a resident Bobcat around...At least there are no more mice!

And then the comments:

Bruce Scott Here kitty, kitty, kitty....

Sasha Jevtich the bobcat is a relief compared to the mouse condo we had next to us
Bo Jevtich GC at its "best..."
Edward Segrist I hear bobcats are afraid of elephants...

Bo Jevtich watch out for mountain lions. Just so long as no bugs. "love the outdoors, except the bugs...;-)"

Alicia Namoi McGraw lol gotta love nature

Sasha Jevtich Next year, before we even park the rig, the first order of business: Shake out some Bobcat urine!
Me: Yup, there are mountain lions here, but I got Bobcat instead - as I wanted to scare away the mice, squirrels and rabbits...Of course then we read the Wikipedia - bobcat can go after deer too - but not as often. Found out there is a residential bobcat living near by. He is probably wonder WHO IS this other bobcat and what is he doing in MY territory!

Mary Ellen Doyle Laura, my sisters r camping in the canyon right now. They are in the tent campsite without electriicy near the south rim!! R u near there? Have u ever been to antelope canyon near page, AZ???

Me: Hi Mary Ellen - while we have not been to Page, AZ, it is very close to us. Hopefully your sisters will come into Grand Canyon NP, and go to Desert View area. We have a great campground here too!

Mary Ellen Doyle They r at the grand canyon .... somewhere near th el tovar.they just did a day trip to antelope canyon. We all went there 4 yrs ago. It is so cool. Navajo owned and operated tours. There r 2 to see. This time they went to the one we missed. Look online...its like another world inside. They drive 2 vegas on th 12th. Quite the opposit of campmg without electricity for 8 days. Lol

Beth Gershman Let me know how effective & where to get! I've been wondering about repellants, as I get signs that mice are poking around inside the patrol truck AND now my prius!!! @#$%^&

Me: I have heard from my boss - she uses peppermint oil for the vehicles - keeps them out.

Me: The company is called Critter Repellent and so far is is working like a charm...even if we do have a bobcat nearby. I really do not care - the less mice, the better it is!

The best part - it really does not smell like serious urine...which is a great thing!

Sasha Jevtich Yeah, bobcat urine from Critter Repellent is doing the trick for us so far. We had a really bad infestation next to our rig and I was catching 2-3 mice a day. They are now all gone as best as I can tell.

Sasha Jevtich It comes in powder form-spread it on the ground where you park the vehicles.

Beth Gershman I've gotta try this! Who cares if my garage smells like bobcat pee! (j/k Laura I know you said it doesn't smell.)

June 14th: Major congrats to our Nephew, Johnny Batal, who got accepted to Jamk University, Jyväskylä Finland. This is not a semester abroad. He will attend all 4 years there.

June 17: Today's my Monday and I am actually feeling OK - of course, hacking out a lung last night and taking a strong medicine to knock me out might have actually worked. Hopefully fresh air will do me some good.

Starting to get warm...then:

June 29th: Raining here while it is sunny out. So glad monsoon season is happening. Maybe it will cool things down a little. Although I thought it would be happening, I don't know, in the afternoon.

And the comments:

well, that was pretty quick. All done now. Took all of two minutes :(

Laura Capuano Jevtich OK, right above us is some seriously black clouds. And here comes the rain again. Time to close the windows!

Laura Capuano Jevtich And it is again done. This time at least it rained for a minute. And cooled it down a little.

Yvonne Jevtich Batal Ok today and tomorrow here are just beautiful, not typical no humidity out! I'm happy as I have BUNCO here at our house tomorrow night. Should be lovely poolside!
Seafood boil on the radar... Wish u were here to play w us.

Beth Gershman I hope you're right! 98 today at least

Carolyn Steele Segrist Where's the rainbow?

Laura Capuano Jevtich The wind blew away the rainbow. We were having gusts of ~ 40 to 45 mph. One gust blew a hummingbird right out of the sky. Unfortunately, it is dead. I'm sure it will be gone in the morning.

Carolyn Steele Segrist WOW!! We have been having high gusts of wind here today, too. Couldn't play golf this AM.

Alice de Anguera We got some rain too, so refreshing and fantastic, but unfortunately I don't think it is monsoon yet. Sunny, hot, and clear forecasted for all next week.

Laura Capuano Jevtich It is interesting, we are supposed to get some more rain this weekend, but today is totally clear, just again the wind gusts of 35-47 mph. It really is windy here at 7400 feet. At least it is only going to get up to 81-82 degrees today. We are going to go into the Village for internet, small amount of groceries, and maybe a short walk.

Major updating of the website. Who knows, I might be up to date for the first time in years!

Check out Next Month: July for Pictures and Expenses of July (even though not completely over, I am not expecting any major expenses.
