 Living Off the Grid
Can We Do It?

Wherever We Park It, That is Where We Are, 2009

This is going to be slightly different from any of the other pages. I am going to put a couple of recipes here that I got from others, plus some of my own, and give you approximate amounts of the food stuff/fuel/other stuff that I think is important for living off the grid. I know that the Mormons do this sort of thing in case of the "end of the world" scenario, but we are doing it so that less time is spent at the grocery store and more time is spent on fun things.

Recipe from Ellie Hamilton on Dehydrated Pea Soup:

6 cups dry split peas
12 potatoes
12 carrots
1 bunch celery
4 onions
2 bulbs garlic
6 cans diced rutabaga including liquid
Water to almost cover
1-2 tablespoons liquid smoke flavor
Cook all till soft, then mash with potato masher.
It needed stuff. I added salt to taste (a lot), probably 3 tablespoons granulated garlic (honest), about 2 cups turnip greens pureed in blender; finally, about half a cup of Dijon mustard made it perfect.

Dehydrating soup: 5 trays in the dehydrator for today, more in the pot keeping cold on the porch, and a couple big containers in the freezer. To dehydrate any kind of food: Spread on sheets -- cookie sheets, bake in slow oven, about 150-200*, until dry; dehydrator trays, plug in, process till done. It takes 4-12 hours depending on the food.

While this sounds like a great recipe, Sasha has the worry about how messy it would be, and the energy cost of making it. If WinCo has this type of soup already dehydrated, I think it would be better to buy it rather than make it.

This is the list so far, I have broken it down to breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks rather than just a list of stuff. As breakfast is the most important meal of the day, we want to make sure we have all the listed ingredients to make it as healthy as possible.

Check out Taking a Stroll through Oregon, fleeing the snow on the way to Springfield, Oregon for solar panels for the truck. We then will head into California, then we shall see where we will go next.
