Laura and Sasha's Trip to Scotty's Castle - February 2011

February 16th: So we are headed to Scotty's Castle but before we do, we would go on a little hike through Mosaic Canyon. We only went a little ways up it, as the clouds were coming in, but it was an interesting place.

This place is considered to be a geologic wonderland. As a trained Geologist, I was loving it. The link is to the NPS site about Mosaic Canyon.

Map Me getting to understand the rocks. You know, some of us geologist are rock whisperers. We talk to the rocks and get lots of cool stories from them, like how they came to be at this place, and where they were beforehand.

Map And here is me and my father, as I explain to others about how this rock came to be here. Park Ranger on Vacation.

Map Excellent Shot of all of us.

Like I said before, the distances are huge here, but we decided to check out Scotty's Castle after this hike.

..

..

So we are coming up to Scotty's Castle, with the first of the amazing views here.

OK, well we know that it was not really Scotty's Castle, but the link explains more than I can. It was a pretty nice home to have in the desert. We just went on the house tour, not the underground tour.

Map Looks like a castle don't it?

Map Man oh Man, just look at the architecture. And the neat old car.

Map Beautiful, I would imagine the dusting here would be pretty significant! It almost does not look real.

So after the tour of Scotty's Castle, we had a bite to eat at their cafe, although there was not much selection. But it was a bit after lunch, and I guess the crowds got most everything. But we found a few sandwiches and chips and got something to drink, and it worked for us.

We then headed to the Crater. Ubehebe Crater to be exact. Death Valley really has it all - great geology, astronomy, history and culture. I just would not want to be there in the summer!

So Check out the February Pages: Death Valley, Scotty's Castle, and DEVA Geology. We also did a hike before we went out to Death Valley, again going to Liberty Bell Arch.
